Note Gallery
Pictures of the Large-Sized United States
Paper Currency The Atlantic Collection contains
different types of notes with different designs and different
dates, but all are Large Sized notes from the late Nineteenth
Century and in fantastic condition.
The note pictured below is a sample of one of the notes
from the collection – not the best and not the worst,
although the conditions all look very similar to the untrained
eye.
Jackass Note
The
Jackass Note is a design that appeared on several $10 Legal
Tender notes at the end of the 1800s. These notes are so
named because when you turn them upside down, the picture
of the bald eagle looks like the head of a donkey (see right).
Obverse

An Alfred Sealy portrait of Daniel Webster, United States
Congressman, Senator, and Secretary of State appears in
the lower left-hand corner. An illustration on the far right
depicts Pocahontas being presented to England’s royal
court.
Reverse

The reverse of the note bears an ornate “greenback”
design. The right-hand side declares the note is legal tender
and a warning for counterfeiters. Anyone convicted of this
crime would be subject to a “Five Thousand ($5,000)
Dollars FINE, or Fifteen (15) years imprisonment at HARD
LABOR OR BOTH.”
