SECRET CURRENCY TREASURE FROM THE 1800'S SELLS FOR OVER $10 MILLION

$20,000 Face Value Appreciates 500-Fold

Santa Monica, CA, October 16, 2003 - What may be the largest trove of unused American paper money to survive from the 1800's was sold through Goldline International of Santa Monica, California (www.Goldline.com). The entire collection of $5, $10, and $20 notes was sold privately to investors and collectors.

"The existence of the collection was kept secret until now," said Mark Albarian, President and CEO of Goldline. "We offered the notes to a select group of our clients and they sold out very quickly. Many serious collectors are going to be disappointed that they did not have an opportunity to acquire these notes for their collections."

Historical collections of paper money are truly a rarity. Very few paper notes from the 1800’s have survived. Most of the currency was spent and ultimately destroyed as new notes were issued.

This particular collection of paper money has unique historical distinction due to its extremely high quality. Prior to its discovery, many of these notes were virtually unknown to have survived in uncirculated condition. Albarian added, “Most experts in the paper money field will be shocked that a collection of this quality survived in such incredible condition.”

The grouping, named the Atlantic Collection (www.AtlanticCollection.com), was held as vault cash reserves in a bank located near the Eastern seaboard. Prices paid for the notes varied considerably: between $2,075 and $50,000 based on rarity and condition.

High grade United States paper money from the Nineteenth Century is usually even more valuable than gold coins from the same era. Given the choice of saving a $20 bill or a $20 gold coin, most people saved the gold. Paper money is also more vulnerable to damage, further contributing to its rarity.

The collection of large-size notes includes the “Woodchopper” and “Jackass” designs, both of which first appeared in the Series of 1869. These designs depict scenes of early American life and are widely considered some of the finest examples of the engravers’ art.

Goldline has brought other famous collections to market, including former Horseshoe Casino owner Ted Binion’s Silver Dollar Collection and the Wells Fargo® Nevada Gold Collection of $20 gold coins.
